Expert Discussion on the Results of the Public Opinion Research on the Media Freedom in BiH

Ajdin Perčo, Populari’s policy resercher attended an Expert Discussion on the Results of the Public Opinion Research on the Media Freedom in BiH held on May 08, 2013 in Sarajevo, BiH, organized by the Association of BH Journalists and funded by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.

The purpose of the discussion was to discuss the latest survey on media freedoms, carried out by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.

Ajdin used the discussion as an opportunity to present Populari’s experience on media sector gained during the research on media reporting on the EU, and published in the report ”From Brazil to Brussels”.

One of the key messages of this conference was that according to the survey, citizens of BiH place their trust mostly in the media, followed by civil society sector and religious community. At the same time, citizens consider politicians and political parties as least trustworthy.

There was a diverse set of participants at the debate including for example Lejla Turčilo, the professor at Faculty of political science in Sarajevo, Zvonimir Jukić, the Program Director of Federal TV and Adis Arapović, the Project Manager from Centre for Civil Initiatives.

It has been pointed out that while the media are often under influence of political factors, there are certain journalists conducting their job in truly professional manner and this has been recognized by the citizens. In addition to this, civil society sector including think tank Populari needs to continue actively educate citizens and promote positive values.
